Welcome to Tallahassee in the summer. It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity. So, when you’ve got some free time, join us for “Coffee Talk” on Thursdays, preferrably iced – we’ll buy the first round. Tomatoes? Cheese? How about some special pizza and other treats? Shavuot celebrates the giving of the 10 Commandments. It’s also the season for new fruits, cheese and vegetables. In honor of the festival which begins Tuesday night, Hillel invites you to our annual (dairy) Shavuot lunch at noon on Wednesday. We’ll share delicious food (some from our Hillel garden), good times and look at Shir Hama’alot – A song of Ascension to Jerusalem. Passover 2011

I hope you are all excited for Passover! First night Seder is Monday night, April 18 here at Hillel at 7p.m. Doors open at 6:45pm. Tickets are $20 per student or $36 for a community member. We have room for about 60-70 people. It is first come, first serve. Kosher for Passover food will be available all during the week of passover for lunch and dinner.
NOTE: As of this morning, April 13th we have no more space at First Seder (so we took the Paypal button off the site.)
We are offering free “Seder in a Box” which is almost everything you need to host a Seder in your own home/dorm. You can reserve before Thursday at noon by email request here and plan to pick-up by Friday, April 15 by 6p.m.
Want to attend a Seder at a local synagogue or with a family? Contact the director, Melanie Annis, and she’ll make arrangements. Chabad will be hosted both first and second night Sederim. Temple Israel (Reform) will be hosting a Second night Seder. Check the links on the left at the “Jewish Resources” page.
Be sure to sell your Chametz no later than Monday, April 18 at noon. You can do so through the local Conservative synagogue (click here to request the form) or on-line at the Chabad website.

Keep Kosher During Passover (KK4P)
Every day of Passover we will be serving lunch and dinner at Hillel. Lunch : 12:00pm-2:00pm and Dinner: 6:30-8:30pm. Lunch is $2 and dinner is $3 payable at the door. If you’d like to buy a $20 meal plan for the whole week, just click the button below.
We use Paypal which securely accepts most credit cards — and you don’t need an account, so select “Buy Now” enter your info and you’re on your way!
Here are the dates and basic planned menus. There will be salad, fruit and matzah at every meal. And, there talk of adding some very interesting dishes too.

Shira Brownstein z”l

On Saturday morning, March 19, Shira Brownstein passed away. Her funeral will be at Culley’s Meadowwood on Timberlane Road on Monday, March 21, at 10 AM. Immediately afterward, the family will receive visitors at the home of Lou and Rhea Schwartz, 3133 Ortega Drive.
There will be a minyan held at the home of Fred and Patti Brownstein, 3354 Barrow Hill Trail, at 7 PM Monday through Thursday (3/21-3/24).

Where Can I Hear the Megilla Read?

It’s Purim and that means we’ll be reading the Scroll of Esther – a great story of what it means when you stand up for yourself and what you believe in! There are a couple of places in Tallahassee you can go to hear the whole Megilla read. Click here to learn more about Purim and Esther. 
Chabad of Tallahassee:
Saturday night March 19th, Megillah Reading will start at 8:45 pm SHARP.
Sunday Morning, March 20th, Morning Services start at 9:30am followed by the Megillah Reading at 10:15am.
Sunday Afternoon, March 20th, Megillah Reading will be at 4:00pm SHARP followed by our annual Purim Party
Shomrei Torah (Conservative):
Sunday, March 20: We’ll have a Shacharit service/Megillah reading at 8:30 a.m. and then it’s time for Shomrei Torah’s annual Purim carnival!
Temple Israel (Reform):
March 19, 2011 – Purim Potluck & Purim Service
We will start with a vegetarian/dairy pOTluck dinner at 6 pm in the Social Hall. Then around 7 pm we will move into the sanctuary for the Purim Service that includes the megillah reading and Purim Spiel written by our very own Leah Cassorla & Stefanie Posner This is one service when you are encouraged to be loud especially when we say Haman! Costumes and groggers encouraged! Very kid friendly!

Jewish Awareness Week – March 20-25

From Mar. 20-25, Hillel at FSU will host its first ever Jewish awareness week. For the entire week there will be programming open to the entire student body about various Jewish customs, holidays, and celebrations. The week is fully packed and Hillel is very excited to share the excitement with all of you. Among a Bagel Brunch, Purim Carnival on Landis Green, and Holocaust Remembrance program, a comedy troupe called “Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad” (presented by SGA, PRIDE, Noles for Israel, and Hillel) will be taking the stage on our campus. Join us for a FREE show on Monday Mar. , 21 at 8 pm in Moore auditorium. This event is free and open to the entire community. Along with the programming each day there will be tabling on various hot topics and issues in the union. During tabling and programming there will be daily raffles and prizes such as free sweatshirts, T-shirts, gift cards at hot spots, and a parking spot at Hillel for the rest of the semester! Get excited, and hope to see you there! All events are free and open to the public.
